A Jam 4 Joshua
Sunday, July 15—11am-7pm
Miner's Foundry, Nevada City
The jam was loads of fun—the Miner's Foundry is a gorgeous venue (donated for the day, thank you very much!) and there was plenty of good food and drink and music for a good cause. Here's a brief look at the bands that performed.
Loose Change
A great start to the lineup, Loose Change played a great set of guitar and harp-driven blues and rock covers.
one Ton Eyelid
After opening with a great cover of Led Zeppelin's "Bron-Y-Aur Stomp" from the oh-so-folky third album, Eyelid played an hour's worth of excellent originals. It takes a certain amount of confidence to open with someone else's popular song—these guys know exactly what they're doing. We here at The Grassies are looking forward to working with one Ton Eyelid in the future.
The Johnsons
With J4J soundman Michael Trickey out front on vocals and harp, The Johnsons mixed brand new edge with classic rock and blues covers. Some great guitar playing and a very nice Thunderbird bass helped enormously.
Remley
Having just released their first CD of original material, Remley proved once again that some bands are born to be live. Their excellent tunes had just a bit more snap and fire in the live set. Another group of gents we're looking forward to a long friendship with.
Catherine Scholz & the Full Circle Threshold Choir
The healing music of the Full Circle Threshold Choir is rarely heard outside the private rooms of those in transitional phases of life, needing the comfort of healing music. The short powerful set of chants and rounds, a capella, was a compelling transition from the rock and roll of the early sets.
Ray of Light
Featuring the Grassies' own Primary Evangelist Andy Gonzales on congas, Ray of Light included, for the first time, the electric violin of Robert Russell. Ray's songs are spiritual without being preachy. Great lively set; a nice upbeat transition from the choir before the to power to come.
Power of Twelve
Good thing the Foundry has an enormous stage; these folks were still jammed tight. (Hmmm . . . tight jam . . . musical pun?) Yup, 12 musicians flailing and wailing everything from nearly everybody: Prince, Santana, James Brown, Tower of Power, Chicago, Sly and the Family Stone. Next time P12 is playing, put on your dancing shoes and pay a visit. A great finish to this day, or any.
Thanks again to Michael Trickey for providing the excellent sound engineering for the entire event, Gretchen Bond and Miners Foundry for donating the spectacular venue, David Gastoni and the folks at Citizens Pizza for feeding the hungry bands, and the vendors who donated all the swag below: A Family Affair, Arrow Printers, Art Etcetra, Big O Tires, Christopher's Deli, Grass Valley Outfitters, Harmony Books, JayVanti, KVMR 89.5, Miners Foundry, Mountain Song, Naggiar Winery, Peter Wilson, Port Of Subs, Solune Winery, and SoundCheck Music.
Yours truly had a ball pretending to be stage manager (meaning I got to walk around onstage, take photos, chat with the bands more than usual, and generally make a nuisance of myself.) And of course, a special thanks to Andy Gonzales for sparking the rest of us to action.
